Understanding of Healing
The nature of healing and sickness is central to Christian Science. The sick
and sinning mortal person who is physically seen is a false representation, a
misconception of the true nature of the human being. Healing comes from
rejecting the false concept in favor of the truth. There is an absolute
distinction between the divine mind, God, and false mentality. On the basis of
this, Christian Science rejects the use of suggestion, will power, hypnotism
and all forms of psychotherapy which use the human mind as an agent of healing.
Christian Science turns human thought to the enlightening and saving power
of divine truth. Healing results from drawing closer to God in thinking and
living. A person who needs practical care during the course of healing may use
a Christian Science nurse, who focuses on details of cleanliness. No medication
is given.
There are some exceptions to the rule that a doctor and Christian Science
practitioner may not be involved in the same case. A doctor or midwife may be
used in childbirth. A doctor may set broken bones but without the use of
medication.
In the case of infectious diseases, Christian Scientists follow the law in
reporting and observe rules of quarantine, but rely wholly on spiritual means
for healing. When medical treatment for minor children is required by law, the
requirement is followed, but followers believe that they have a right, even if
not recognized, to refuse medical treatment for their children.
If a Christian Scientist does choose to accept medical treatment no coercion
or pressure is used to change the person’s decision. They are simply viewed as
being tragically in error.
Reproductive Issues
There is opposition to compulsory genetic testing. Clearly, medical
interventions of all types would be opposed.
End of Life Issues/Terminal Care
Euthanasia would be contrary to the teachings of Christian Science. Medical
care of all types would be opposed.
Autopsies/Care of the Body
An autopsy might be requested if death occurred in unusual circumstances.
Special Treatment Issues (Blood,
drugs, dietary, etc.)
Vaccines are accepted only when required by law. Drugs or blood products are
ordinarily not used.
Notes for Pastoral Care
While respecting the right to accept or reject medical care, it is often
helpful to clarify with a patient what forms or types of care they would choose
to receive. What a patient expresses in private may be very different from what
is expressed when family and friends who are Christian Scientists are present.
Care should also be taken to avoid the situation of a family member
“overriding” the patient’s beliefs or decisions. Frequently staff are in need
of moral support in situations of conflict, especially if there is a fear of
lawsuits.
